Haunted House Card Tutorial

Happy Wednesday Everyone! Today, I am going to share with you a tutorial on one of the Halloween themed cards, which I designed for Tim Holtz for his Facebook Live event last Friday.

First of all, it was such an honor to have an opportunity to design for Tim Holtz. I can now check it off my bucket list! Checked!

I had so much fun playing with some of the stamps and stencils from Tim's brand new Stampers Anonymous Halloween 2016 collection. The entire collection is amazing!

I designed two cards for Tim. This tutorial is going to be on the haunted house card. We are going to be using Regions Beyond stamp set and Linen stencilI decided to do this tutorial because many people had asked me how I attached the haunted house to the card and how I made the background.

It is going to be a fun tutorial with lots of pictures!

Let's start with the background...

On your craft sheet, using a palette knife, mix a scoop of Wendy Vecchi's white Embossing Paste with a couple drops of Jet Black Archival re-inker. Add more archival re-inker until you achieve the desired color. Keep in mind...you cannot put the mixed embossing paste back into the jar. Only mix what you are going to use.

Spread the mixed embossing paste onto a piece of white cardstock. The size of my card is 5"x6.5". I plan on matting my card with a piece of black cardstock. As a result, the size of my white cardstock, which I am going to call my "background", is 4.75"x6.25".

There is no need to completely cover the entire background with the embossing paste. Leave some blank space on the background. Let dry.

Once dry, cover the background with a layer of Wendy Vecchi's Crackled Texture Paste. Again, there is no need to completely cover the entire background. In addition, do not worry about trying to spread the paste evenly. Those "peaks" will add extra texture to the background. Let dry.

In the meantime, while we are waiting for the Crackled Texture Paste to dry...

On a piece of Ranger Watercolor Paper, stamp the Haunted House, Raven and Owl images, using Jet Black Archival ink. Leave at least 1" space to the right of the haunted house. This is going to be a hinge, which we will later attach to the card. Sprinkle clear embossing powder on top of each image and heat emboss.

Use Tim Holtz' Water Detailer Brush and Distress Markers/Distress Inks to color the images.

Use the following colors to color the haunted house: Rusty Hinge, Dusty Concord, Mustard Seed, Peeled Paint, Pumice Stone, and Weathered Wood.

You may want to ask why I use both markers and inks to color. The answer is...there is no special reason why I use both. I usually prefer to use Distress Markers when I do watercolor coloring. However, I do not have all of the Distress Markers. For the colors I do not have in markers, I use colors from the inks instead.

Use the following colors to color the owl: Mustard Seed, Antique Linen, Vintage Photo, Walnut Stain, Pumice Stone and Weathered Wood. Apply Xmas Red Stickles to the eyes for added spookiness!

Cut out the images. Again, leave at least 1" space to the right of the haunted house. In addition, leave the top of the haunted house uncut for now. We will cut it later.

Since the haunted house is going to be swung back and forth, we are going to add some texture to the back of it, using the Wrinkle Free Distress Technique. Apply Wild Honey, Chipped Sapphire, Weathered Wood and Brushed Pewter Distress Stains to the craft sheet. Mist the stains with water and press the back of the haunted house onto the wet stains. Dry with heat tool.

Repeat this step until you are satisfied with the background. Remember to dry it in between each layer.

To add another layer to the back of the haunted house, ink Scattered Straw Distress Ink through the Linen Stencil. I love how it adds another layer to the background yet so subtle!

Next, stamp the Journal image to the back of the haunted house with Weathered Wood Distress Ink. You only need to stamp to the right side of the house because the left side is going to be your hinge.

Back to the background...

Don't you love how the black embossing paste shows through the cracks? Awesome, isn't it? It is okay if your paper curls up when the paste is dry. One good thing I love about Wendy Vecchi's Crackled Texture Paste is the fact that it does not crack or fall off my background even when I try to bend the paper.

Lightly ink the entire background with Scattered Straw Distress Ink.

Cut or punch a 2 inch circle from idea-ology mask sheet. This is going to be your moon. Place the cut out mask to the top left corner of the background. Apply the following colors of Distress Stain to the background: Wild Honey, Weathered Wood, Chipped Sapphire and Bundled Sage. Let dry.

With the mask still intact, ink the entire card with Scattered Straw Distress ink to bring all of the colors together. Remove the mask and ink the edges of the card with Black Soot Distress Ink.

Apply a thin layer of Multi Medium (Matte) to the front of the background. Glue and Seal (Matte) will work well too. Let dry. You are finally done with the background!

Back to the haunted house piece...

Cut out the top of the haunted house and fold the white area to the back.

Apply adhesive to the hinged area and attach it to the back of the background.

Voila! You haunted house is now attached to the background! Here is a look at the images of the front and back of the background once the haunted house has been attached.

Adhere a piece of black cardstock to the front of your card. Adhere the haunted house with background to the front of the card. At this point, the hinge should be sandwiched between your background and the black cardstock.

Stamp "open if you dare." and "something wicked this way comes." on a piece of white cardstock, sprinkle clear embossing powder and heat emboss. To achieve the vintage "Dennison" label look, cut around the words and ink the edges of each label with Festive Berries Distress Marker. To make them look grungy, crumple and ink the edges of each label with Vintage Photo Distress Ink.

Time to finish decorating the card...

Foam tape the raven on top of the moon. Foam tape each label to the front of the card. From idea-ology frames and trims industrious stickers, adhere the medium sized oval frame to the card. Make sure that the frame is hidden when the haunted house is closed. Adhere the owl to the front of the oval frame. Again, make sure that the owl is hidden. Adhere the corners to the top right and bottom left of the card. Voila! You haunted house card is done!

I hope you enjoyed my haunted house card tutorial. It was so much fun playing with the stamps and stencils from Tim's new collection.

Happy Creating,
